Empty hours

Esther Bach, Kate Harmon & Evi Heinen

Using a range of materials, fiber, painting, mezzotint, the artists speak to what might at first seem like quiet moments of the domestic. Through cropped and focused scenes, Bach, Harmon, and Heinen reveal the true density of these moments. These instances come together, an image of a bedroom, the abstraction of a bodily gesture in black and white, a knitted phrase, collectively asking for further reflection, emphasizing an awareness of time.

Surfaces built up over hours, richly textured with a veil of paint over top. Row after row of stitches growing from a machine. Copper slowly stretched under the weight of a blade. To the artists in Empty Hours, craft is a language of observation. The artists pull from both literary and visual references with varying degrees of proximity: inherited and thrifted family photographs, lines of writing extracted from their original context.
